Nozawa Onsen-village is located in the northern part of Nagano prefecture, bordered by Kijimadaira-village to the south, Iiyama city to the west across the Chikumagawa river, and Sakae-village to the north and east. Nozawa Onsen-village’s landscape is characterized by its broad range of altitudes, from 300 meters above sea level at Akashi, in the northern part of the village, to 1,650 meters above sea level at Mt. Kenashiyama.
Occupying a total area of 57.95 square kilometers, the village is 9.1 kilometers from east to west, 11.5 kilometers from north to south, and 38.2 kilometers around. According to the statistics compiled by the prefecture in 1996, 50.7% of the village area is covered by mountain forests. Thanks to its superb landscape, the village area has been designated as Joshin’etsu Kogen National Park, and 297 hectares including a part of the national park has now been developed as a ski resort.

Extending from the peak to the base of the 1,650 meter Mt. Kenashiyama, the vast Nozawa Onsen ski resort boasts a difference in altitude of 1,085 meters and a total area of ski slopes of 297 hectares, and is ranked as one of Japan’s top ski resorts in terms of total area, history, and snow depth. Slopes are connected by a moving walkway called the “Yu-road,” as well as a total of 21 lifts including 7 high-speed lifts, the Nagasaka gondola-type lift, and the Hikage gondola-type lift. With 36 ski courses, a kids’ park, a snow park, and a fresh snow area, all sorts of skiers from beginners to advanced skiers can get full satisfaction.
